The company is a business enterprise involved in the supply and distribution of electricity to end consumers. It builds, operates, and services the installation that carry out this function, guaranteeing the quality of the supply as well as a direct and personalized attention to its customers. The company was established in January 2000. Based in Oviedo, it has active business operations mainly in the Principality of Asturias (Principado de Asturias) in Spain. The company is a regulated business with rates officially approved to carry out its activity within the Spanish National Electric System. It has played an important role in the definition of such rates, with the development of a Reference Network Model (BULNES), which is to be used as a reference for the rates to be applied by other supplier companies, based on objective and universal criteria which allot the cost among these in a fair way. The company's goal is to increase in the profit-earning capacity of the distribution business by means of cost savings and improvement of income and growth of its market beyond the conventional borders. As of December 1999, the company's transmission and distribution installations include: 1,362 kilometers of high-voltage network, 4,493 kilometers of overhead medium voltage network, 919 kilometers of underground medium voltage network, 11,089 kilometers of overhead low voltage network, 1,428 kilometers of underground low voltage network and 5,467 transformers. In addition, the company is responsible for the supply of electric power to approximately 525,000 full rate customers. It also facilitates access to its installations to more than 400 eligible customers. All in all, the total amount of electric power invoiced annually represents a 92 percent of the consumption in the Asturias region. The company is part of HidroCantábrico group (hc energía), an energy utility group established in 1919 as an electricity output, transportation, conversion and distribution company. Nowadays, HidroCantábrico group is a diversified enterprise being present in other areas of the energy producing scene such as gas and the field of renewable energies, as well as in other strategic businesses such as telecommunications.
